-Amazing dance moves for early twentieth century. I am normally leery of modern soundtracks for archaic film but this works perfectly. Wonder what the original score for theaters was.

-@latinbeatz The music doesn't "ridicule" the film at all; I think it's an inspired choice for accompaniment, especially when you see everybody dancing in the room near the end (that policeman does a mean pogo!). it's a fun film, which deserves some fun music, and it's nicely synched to the film, too. Lighten up!

Née dans une famille misérable d'un petit village de Galice, Ponte de Valga, Caroline Otero est, selon sa biographie violée à onze ans par un cordonnier et chassée de la maison familiale par sa mère alors qu'elle n'a encore que douze ans. Elle débuta dans les cabarets de Barcelone puis vint à Paris où elle se produisit au Grand Véfour ou au Cirque d'été. Un avortement forcé la rend stérile par la suite, alors qu'elle est prostituée de force par son mari.

En 1890, elle fit une tournée triomphale aux États-Unis. Revenue à Paris en 1892, elle était désormais lancée, se faisant une spécialité des rôles de belle étrangère aux Folies Bergère ou au Théâtre des Mathurins. Elle portait des tenues de scènes somptueuses, où les joyaux authentiques mettaient en valeur ses seins, qui furent si célèbres qu'on prétend que les coupoles de l'Hôtel Carlton à Cannes avaient été basées sur leur moulage ! Elle fit plusieurs tournées en Europe, en Amérique et en Russie.

En août 1898, Otero devient « la première star de l'histoire du cinéma » lorsque l'opérateur Félix Mesguich, à Saint-Pétersbourg, filme un numéro de danse au moyen d'un cinématographe Lumière. La projection qui se déroule le lendemain au music-hall Aquarium suscite des réactions si violentes que Mesguich sera expulsé de Russie[1].

Elle devint l'amie de Colette et l'une des catins les plus en vue de la Belle Époque, avec la Carmencita, espagnole comme elle, ou encore Liane de Pougy, Cléo de Mérode et Émilienne d'Alençon. Avec Liane de Pougy, elle entretint une rivalité tapageuse : « On se rappelle l'idée qu'elle eut, pour éclipser une rivale, d'apparaître un soir au théâtre dans un boléro constellé de diamants. Mais la femme qu'elle jalousait était Liane de Pougy. Avertie de l'exhibition qui se préparait, elle arriva, les bras, le cou, les épaules et les mains absolument nus. Quand elle fut dans sa loge, qui faisait face à celle de Caroline Otero, on put voir qu'elle était suivie de sa femme de chambre portant tous ses bijoux » (André de Fouquières).

Elle séduisit des rois – Édouard VII du Royaume-Uni, Léopold II de Belgique – des aristocrates russes ou britanniques (le Duc de Westminster, le grand-duc Nicolas de Russie), des financiers, des écrivains, comme Gabriele d'Annunzio, des ministres comme Aristide Briand qui fut longtemps son amant. Elle fit tourner bien des têtes et fut à l'origine de plusieurs duels et de six suicides.

Le 18 octobre 1901, Agustina Otero Iglesias, dite Caroline Otero ou « La Belle Otero », fait sa rentrée à l’Olympia dans le rôle de la gitane Mercedes pour Une fête à Séville. Une pantomime en un acte de René Bréviaire sur une musique de Georges Palicot, avec l'acteur Paul Franck dans le rôle du toréador. Cette pièce fut créée pour la première fois au Théâtre Marigny en septembre 1900, en pleine Exposition universelle.Cette pantomine en un acte sera filmee par Alice Guy pour une de ses 157 phonoscenes
Pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, elle se produisit pour soutenir le moral des soldats français. Puis, en 1915, encore belle et au sommet de sa gloire, elle prit sa retraite et s'installa à Nice où elle se ruina dans les casinos et mourut à 96 ans oubliée et pauvre.

Elle fit l'objet d'un film " La Belle Otero " réalisé par Marc-Gilbert Sauvajon au cinéma .

Résidences [modifier]

* A Paris, elle résidait à l'angle de l'avenue Pierre-Ier-de-Serbie et de la rue Georges-Bizet (16e arrondissement), puis dans un hôtel particulier au 27 rue Fortuny (17e arrondissement).
* De 1903 à 1911, elle eut une maison à Andrésy (Yvelines) au 70 Grande Rue (actuellement rue du Général Leclerc).
* Après 1915, elle habite à Nice, 26 rue d'Angleterre.
